Position Overview

The Director of Billing Operations is responsible for leading the end-to-end strategy, execution, and continuous improvement of UKG’s SaaS billing operations, with a core focus on complex usage- and consumption-based billing.

The Director serves as the enterprise authority on usage billing and SaaS billing operations, operating across a highly complex ecosystem of:

Multiple upstream source systems

Salesforce CPQ & Billing

ERP platforms (D365)

Diverse contract structures and pricing models

This role is accountable not only for billing execution, but for ensuring that upstream processes (quoting, contracting, usage generation, and integrations) are designed correctly to enable accurate billing downstream.

Role Scope & Impact

Owns billing outcomes tied to material revenue streams driven by usage and overages

Drives alignment across Sales, Deal Desk, Renewals, Product, Engineering, Finance, and Customer teams

Provides leadership in an environment where:

processes are highly interdependent

systems are not fully standardized

Data originates from multiple sources with varying quality and structure

Mitigates risk related to revenue leakage, billing inaccuracies, and audit exposure, which have historically resulted from fragmented ownership and inconsistent processes 1

Key Responsibilities

  • Function Ownership & Strategic Leadership

Lead the Usage Management & Billing Operations function, with full ownership of billing accuracy, completeness, and timeliness

Define and execute the operational strategy for scaling billing processes in line with company growth

Establish clear ownership, accountability, and operating standards across previously fragmented processes 2

  • Usage & Consumption Billing (Primary Accountability)

Own end-to-end processes for usage-based and consumption-based billing, including complex overage calculations

Ensure billing accuracy across multiple upstream source systems with differing data structures, reporting logic, and integration methods

Translate usage data into billable outcomes by aligning:

Usage data outputs

Salesforce configuration

Contract terms (including custom employee/count types and pricing structures)

Identify and resolve gaps where usage data, contract setup, or system integration would result in incorrect billing

This is the most critical responsibility of the role.

  • Quote-to-Contract-to-Bill Alignment

Ensure proper linkage across quote → order → contract → usage → billing

Review complex contracts and amendments to:

Validate billing readiness

identify misalignment between contractual intent and system configuration

Provide prescriptive guidance to upstream teams (Sales, Deal Desk, Renewals) on:

Billing implications of deal structures

Required corrections or amendments to support accurate invoicing

  • Data, Systems & Integration Ownership

Own the integrity of billing inputs originating from multiple systems across UKG’s product ecosystem

Partner with Engineering and Digital teams to:

Resolve integration issues

Improve data quality and availability

Design scalable solutions for usage and billing data flows

Serve as business owner for system-related billing defects and integration error resolution 3

Compliance with revenue recognition requirements

Audit-ready documentation

Proactively identify risks related to:

Missing or incorrect usage data

Contract misalignment

System gaps or integration failures

Drive systemic fixes to prevent repeat issues and reduce revenue leakage 4

  • Cross-Functional Leadership & Influence

Act as the central point of expertise across:

Sales / Deal Desk

Renewals / Customer Success

Product & Engineering

Revenue Accounting & FP&A

Translate between technical system design, contract terms, and financial outcomes

Influence decisions upstream to prevent downstream billing issues

  • Data, Reporting & Business Insights

Provide visibility into:

Usage trends and anomalies

Billing variances and timing differences

Revenue impacts tied to usage behavior

Partner with Finance and FP&A to explain material fluctuations in usage-based revenue

Drive development of reporting that reconciles source data → Salesforce → ERP billing outputs

  • Process Improvement & Transformation

Lead initiatives to:

Centralize billing operations

Automate manual processes

Improve integration reliability

Drive improvements aligned to major initiatives (e.g., CPQ/Billing transformation, usage automation efforts)

Establish scalable processes that reduce reliance on manual validation and reconciliation

Leadership Expectations (Director-Level Differentiation)

This role is expected to:

Own outcomes, not just processes

Make decisions in ambiguous, non-standard scenarios with significant financial impact

Provide executive-level communication and guidance

Lead through influence across teams that do not directly report into the role

Define future-state operating models, not just manage current workflows

This aligns with director-level scope of owning subscription and billing strategy, leading system design, and partnering on monetization and product evolution 5

Qualifications

10–15+ years of experience in SaaS billing, revenue operations, or finance

Deep expertise in:
